User Experience Nanodegree Capstone Learning Reflection Write-up
Oxana Sidorova - Speaking App
For my case study on the Speaking App, I completed the end-to-end design process, including the following phases: discovery, design, and testing. I was responsible for all aspects of this project, from research to the final product.
I conducted all research-related activities, including preparing a research plan, formulating research questions, conducting interviews, and compiling a research report. In the design phase, I developed concepts, created sketches, low-fidelity wireframes, user flows, and an interaction design model. I also created high-fidelity prototypes using Figma and conducted final testing. My primary tools included Miro, Zeplin, and Moblin.
I embarked on my UX Design course with no prior experience, and I found that my background in finance was particularly helpful when it came to conducting interviews and preparing research plans and reports. Throughout the course, I gained valuable insights into UX, learned to use various tools, mastered process organization, and improved my communication within a team. One of the biggest challenges I faced was finding people to test my prototype and provide feedback.
At the start of my studies, I had the idea for a "Speaking App" – a tool that would enable users to practice speaking foreign languages at their convenience. Users could engage with active teachers for brief conversations or full discussions.
While this study only allowed me to create four screens for my app, I am enthusiastic about the possibility of further developing this concept.
Throughout the project, I made three key discoveries:
1. All of my respondents expressed a desire for more speaking practice but lacked the time.
2. 15-30 minutes of daily speaking practice were deemed sufficient.
3. Two-thirds of respondents were willing to pay for classes.
Developed a low-fidelity prototype using Figma and refined it through two rounds of testing and feedback, ultimately creating the final project using Figma. After conducting final tests with Lookback, 80% of testers found the action buttons clear and easily understood the logical flow.
